Project Overview
Tile flooring is durable, water-resistant, and beautiful. This guide covers floor tile installation for bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways.
Tools and Materials
- Tile and 10% extra for cuts/waste
- Thinset mortar
- Notched trowel (size per tile size)
- Tile spacers
- Tile cutter or wet saw
- Grout and grout float
- Sponge and buckets
- Level and measuring tools
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Prepare Subfloor: Ensure floor is clean, level, and structurally sound. Install cement backer board if needed.
- Plan Layout: Find center of room. Dry-fit tiles to plan layout and minimize cuts. Adjust to avoid thin slivers at walls.
- Mix Thinset: Mix thinset mortar to peanut butter consistency. Let slake 10 minutes, remix.
- Spread Thinset: Apply thinset with flat edge of trowel, then comb with notched edge at 45° angle.
- Set Tiles: Press tiles into thinset with slight twisting motion. Use spacers between tiles. Check level frequently.
- Cut Tiles: Measure and cut tiles for edges using tile cutter or wet saw. Leave 1/4" gap at walls.
- Let Cure: Allow thinset to cure 24 hours before walking on tiles.
- Apply Grout: Remove spacers. Press grout into joints with float at 45° angle. Work in small sections.
- Clean: Wipe excess grout with damp sponge. Buff haze after grout sets.
- Seal: Apply grout sealer after grout fully cures (24-72 hours).
Pro Tips
- Back-butter large tiles for better adhesion
- Work in small sections to prevent thinset from skinning over
- Check tiles for level as you go - adjustments are hard after thinset sets
- Use a wet saw for clean, accurate cuts
