How to Repair Drywall Holes

Project Overview

Drywall holes are common and easy to fix. This guide covers three methods for different hole sizes, from small nail holes to large damage requiring patches.

Tools and Materials

Small Holes (Nail/Screw Holes)

  1. Fill hole with lightweight spackle using putty knife
  2. Scrape excess flush with wall
  3. Let dry (usually 30 minutes)
  4. Sand lightly if needed
  5. Prime and paint

Medium Holes (1-4 inches)

  1. Clean edges of hole
  2. Apply self-adhesive mesh patch over hole
  3. Spread thin layer of joint compound over patch
  4. Let dry, apply second coat extending beyond first
  5. Sand smooth, prime, and paint

Large Holes (4+ inches)

  1. Cut hole into clean square/rectangle shape
  2. Install backing support (furring strips or drywall clips)
  3. Cut drywall patch to fit
  4. Secure patch to backing with screws
  5. Apply mesh tape to seams
  6. Apply 3 coats of joint compound, feathering edges
  7. Sand, prime, and paint
